Explore San Diego!

November 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Vacation Locations in San Diego.

Rather than setting your sights on far away foreign and exotic beaches, explore the beauty within your reach. The beaches of San Diego are among some of the most visited in the world. From Imperial Beach in the south, bordering Tijuana, to Ocean Beach and the Mission Beaches to the north, San Diego beaches have something for everyone.

Many municipal beaches have drive-up parking along the Pacific Coast highway 101, which will be recognized as both La Jolla Boulevard and Mission Drive as you drive south through San Diego. Some parking is free, other is minimal and beach hours are strictly enforced from sun rise to sun down. The sand is a creamy white and alternates between gently rolling beaches and stretches of the Pacific which lie below majestic rock cliffs, which have intermittent caves that are fun to explore at low tide.

For the traveler who can afford the luxury of an oceanfront beach rental on Mission Beach, there are high rise condos, penthouses, private homes, apartment homes and duplexes from which to choose. Most beach rentals are privately owned and rented through Mission Beach Rentals. Plenty of homes have car ports or garages and give you the option of daily housekeeping and a concierge service that is only a phone call away.

Mission Beach Rentals` concierge can help you find popular attractions such as Sea World San Diego, the San Diego Zoo, California`s Legoland and San Diego`s Wild Animal Park. If you are interested in the local sports teams, San Diego is home to the San Diego Padres whose home stadium is Petco Park and the San Diego Chargers who play at Qualcomm Stadium. Both the baseball and football venues offer tours year round.

The best thing about San Diego is that everything is only a short drive from the San Diego International Airport, which is located centrally just south of Mission Beach. Though the University is to the north, it is never more than an hour drive even in heavy traffic.

There are also many guided boat tours, hot air balloon rides, open-air car tours of area vineyards, as well as surfing and kayaking lessons offered at many of the local beaches.

If you are more interested in the city life, San Diego offers a wonderfully rustic old town with many boutique-type shops and an array of restaurants offering plenty of delicious dining choices. In downtown San Diego, you can visit the USS Midway Museum to learn more about San Diego`s Navy heritage. There is also the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and for those who would rather not stay beachside, the Keating Hotel is a beautifully Italian designed hotel with unique room options, spa services and full service workout facility.

The next time you need a vacation, look no further than California. With car hire San Diego, you will be able to get around the city with ease, in your own time and without having to worry about being rushed.

San Diego Breweries

November 20, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

San Diego has a short, but strong presence in the world of Micro Brews.  In 2009, Mens Journal named our fair city#1 Beer City in America.  Believe it or not,we have over 30 brew houses in San Diego.  But first, a couple pointers to get you around the “Artisnal” brew circuit.

Types of Beer

What is a lager?

o Description: Named after its founder, Louis Lager, this drink is characterized mainly by its prominent malt and hops flavor. Are generally sweet and spicy; bright, clear in color, and have a collar of foam around the glass.
o Production: Brewing draws sweetness from the malt; hops are added during the process. The beer is then carbonated and aged over time. Lager is often bottom-fermented and becomes quite smooth and round.
o How to enjoy: Best with spicy foods (pizza, Mexican, Indian, and even seafood).

What is ale?
o Description: Ale can be bitter and spicy or malty and sweet. They can also be any color and strength.
o Production: Ale is fermented with top-fermenting yeast, usually near room temperature. It tends to have a more fruity character than a lager.
o How to enjoy: Try ale with any food that is full of flavor (grilled fish or sharp cheeses).

What is a porter?
o Description: Named for the porters at the Covent Garden Market in 18th century London, porter sustained and provided nourishment for people throughout their long days. They often come in coffee or chocolate flavors and are dark in color.
o Production: A top-fermented beer, it’s brewed as a blend of three beers. At one time porter had a lengthy aging process, which made them quite sour to drink.
o How to enjoy: Porter goes with just about any meat dish (beef, chicken, or lamb). It also goes well with desserts.

What is a stout?
o Description: Stout originated in Australia and Asia. In the 1800s, a beer called Nurse Stout was thought to promote health “for invalids.” It was also used to bathe newborn babies to promote clear skin, or in Irish hospitals to help nursing mothers produce milk. Stout is full-bodied and thick, with a flavor similar to coffee. It can take on many flavors including sweet, bitter, milk, or even oatmeal. Stout is usually deep black in color.
o Production: Stout is a type of ale made with top-fermenting yeast.

What is a pilsner?
o Description: Pilsner became popular in the mid-1800s in Bohemia. People liked the golden, sparkly, clear beer. Pilsners are highly hopped and full of flavor. They are soft to drink and don’t have as thick of a body as other beers.
o How it’s made: Brewed with hops and often have caramel malt added to give a golden color and gentle flavor.
o How to enjoy: Pilsner beer goes with nearly any meat, excluding beef, and with mild cheeses.

What is a wheat beer?
o Description: Drinking wheat beer is as close to drinking champagne as beer ever gets. Originated in Belgium, if you need a thirst-quenching beverage, you may want to try this beer. Wheat ale in itself has a taste full of citrus. Adding fruit flavoring gives a nice aroma and taste.
o How it’s made: Brewed with malted wheat and barley. Yeast is used to ferment the beer. Fruit and more wheat malt are then added.
o How to enjoy: Try drinking wheat beer with a salad or with Chinese food.

San Diego Brewing Co
The original manufacturing facility known as San Diego Brewing Company opened in 1896 with much fanfare. A. E. Horton, the father of San Diego, referred to the Brewery as the most important industrial enterprise since he founded the town. It was the largest manufacturing enterprise in the county. The brew house held a 25 horse power engine which operated the elevator, barley mill, mash tun and other apparatus. The mash tun could easily give shelter to twenty five men! The brewery’s fermenting cellar was filled with great tanks full of amber fluid, foaming and sparkling. The capacity of the plant was 75,000 barrels. San Diego Brewing Company delivered their product to all parts of the city and county in bottles or in barrels. Their beers were said to “sparkle like nectar”. Sadly the company was removed from 32nd Street by the Navy in 1942 and replaced by a base for the Pacific Fleet. Today the new San Diego Brewing Company hopes to carry on the tradition that was started so long ago. Along with an assortment of fresh beers brewed on the premises, San Diego Brewing Company offers fifty taps of beer every day, providing a brew to satisfy each and everyone.

Places to Eat in Pacific Beach

August 31, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

For those of you new to Pacific Beach, or just visiting, I have compiled a list of virtually all of the places to eat in Pacific Beach.  Having lived here most of my adult life (If you can really call spending your early 20′s in PB adulthood), I have compiled my favorites, as well as all other sources of food from which I have been know to forage.

My Favorites

Cotijas’ - I consider myself an expert on Southern California Mexican food, and this is my all around favorite.  In my book, you can judge a good Mexican food joint on 3 things.  Beans, Rice and Salsa.  Cotijas’ nails them all.  I would put their salsa head to head against anyones.  Not only are the burritos huge, the price is unbeatable.  It is possible to stuff 3 people for under $10 bucks!  Personal Recommendation- Breakfast Burrito add Fries.

Poor Boy’s Subs- This place has the freshest meats in Pacific Beach because they are sliced to order.  The bread is fresh and the toppings selection is excellent.  Pick any of them (including the veggie) and you won’t be disappointed.  Personal Recommendation- The Belly Buster on Wheat.

Cafe Athena-This traditional Greek restaurant is a great date spot.  The atmoshpere is light and bright, and the plesant bustle makes for an awkward free evening.  Personal Recommendation-  The Chicken Aioli Pita Sandwich.

Hoboken Pizza-  This San Diego kid would eat here daily if Pizza and Beer were the only things needed to survive.  Thin crust excellence with afternoon beer specials makes this a great place to start the evening.  Or finish it with their delivery going until 2am nightly.  The Boss would be proud.  Personal Recommendation- My Way white Pizza.

Costa Brava- This is a Hidden Jewel in Pacific Beach.  Tucked away on Ingraham, This Spanish Restaurant is a great and lively time.  Eating tapas and drinking Sangria while while enjoing a live  Flamanco dancer perform is a great way to spend an evening.

Rocky’s-Possibly the best burger in San Diego.  If there isn’t a grease spot on the bag before you get home, you probably didn’t eat at Rocky’s

Seeing as variety is the spice of lunch, I have listed most of the other restaurants in Pacific Beach below
